About "Chalet Nicholas" B&B
John and Cathy Nicholas will welcome you to their paradise on Lake Arenal.

As you will enter the private road to "Chalet Nicholas" B&B, the magic will touch you, as you drive under a flowering "Bougainvillea".

The paved driveway is lined with beautiful tropical flowers, and  shaded by large mystical trees.

Suddenly, you are in a clearing and  "Chalet Nicholas" appears on the hilltop, where you will be enchanted by the "breathtaking"  views of Lake Arenal, and Volcano Arenal!

You'll probably be greeted by our FIVE GREAT DANES:  MORRIS & MICKEY (HARLEQUINS) , MINNIE (BOSTONIAN), MARTY & MUKI (FAWN) they are huge, (small ponies), but quite gentle and friendly.

Our Rooms

Inside the "Chalet", the precious hardwood and tile interior, and the comfortable furnishings welcome you and make you feel at home instantly. Ready to start your vacation!

There are three rooms at Chalet Nicholas B&B:

The first is the "Volcano Room" with a window facing  the volcano. It has a double bed and private tiled bathroom inside the room.

The second room is the "Lake View Room" with a window facing Lake Arenal and a side window facing the volcano.  It has a double bed and single bed.  We use this if we have the need for two beds.  It also has a private tiled bathroom just outside the room.

The third room is a DOUBLE LOFT which is L shaped and one side has a queen sized bed with a night bathroom and a window facing the volcano.  The other side has two single beds and a large back porch through French doors facing the forest, fruit trees and garden. 
You can also see Lake Arenal from the front of the loft.  At the bottom of the spiral staircase which leads up to the Loft is a full tiled bathroom for the use of the LOFT residents only (whether it is two, three or ;four people sharing). 
There are wood screens dividing the two sections for privacy and the loft is totally enclosed in precious woods and wood beams. 
So, by mix and match, we can accommodate different types of groups if you plan ahead.

Example: 3 people $83 + tax = $96.60
4 people $98 + tax = $114.06

Breakfast

An American style breakfast is prepared, and you will be "treated" with  "organic fruits" grown right on the property! Wait until you taste Cathy's special omelettes and delicious macadamia pancakes! 

During breakfast you can chat with "John and Cathy", about Costa Rica, and they can give you recommendations and hints about getting around, and you can compare notes with other guests.

If you are interested in properties, Cathy knows about everything that's going on in this area, and may have some unkown treasures for you.

Our Gardens

After breakfast, "Cathy and John", will gladly take you on a tour, of their Tropical Botanical Gardens, a fantastic collection of over "one hundred" Orchids and Heliconias, including the "rare" Bird of Paradise! 

In the morning, you will wake to the songs of tropical birds, (many of our tropical birds love bananas, and you can perch some on a tree, and attract many happy birds...to your vacation home)!  And we have our own "Green Honey Keeper"!  (Shown in the first picture, on the left).

You may also hear in the distance, the "Howler Monkeys", making their early morning rounds!  As well as, "fruit bats", swooping around...nothing to fear, they are harmless.

Our Rainforest

This "Vacation Rental" borders a protected "old-growth" Rainforest, with a beautiful river, running through it. This provides our guests, with natural "hiking" trails, and exceptional "bird watching".  You can observe over "seventy" varieties of birds, in the early morning, or late afternoon.

The Rainforest is behind the house, where you can see lush greenery, huge old-growth trees, monkeys, birds, wildlife, and butterflies.

On the way back, "Cathy and John", can show you their "extensive" reforestation of their property, and you can enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Arenal and the rainforest.

Fishing is fantastic on the lake!  Our famous "Rainbow Bass" are the Catch of the Day!  Relax, have some Cervesas, and basque in the sun....

Go and relax in the beautiful "Tabacon Hot Springs", ride on horseback, through nature trails-that will make you feel young again!
See the World from "Jungle" treetops, on a Rainforest Canopy Tour, take a rafting trip down the "Tropical" Corobici River, fish, swim or windsurf in gorgeous Lake Arenal, mountain bike, or explore the "Venado Caverns"

In the evening, you can watch the dramatic purple sunsets and "star studded" skies, from a rocking chair on the front porch, read books from John and Cathy's library, or watch a videotape about Costa Rica.

Or check out the "great restaurants" in town, for a night to remember!

On a clear day the Arenal Volcano majestically appears in the distance.

After many visits, "John and Cathy Nicholas" moved from New York to Costa Rica, in 1991.  They chose "Arenal" for it's sacred, majestic beauty, its lush wildlife, its relaxing lifestyle, and its proximity to the beaches, and the cool, comfortable climate!  "Chalet Nicholas", has been open since 1992.

Both "John and Cathy", speak English and Spanish.

Our Souvenir Shop:   We have "Special" Costa Rican Souvenirs:  John's beautiful wood "cutting boards" and "souvenirs", (You will definitely love these!), as well as, "colorful, handpainted, lead-free" Costa Rican ceramics..... Also original paintings of rainforest creatures (birds, frogs, etc.) by Catherine Nicholas.....with a choice of adding locally crafted, original design BAMBOO FRAMES that can either be assembled or disassembled to fit into tourists suitcases.....
